C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD, Neurosurgeon, President of Holos Institute of Health, Professor Emeritus of Energy Medicine, Holos University Graduate Seminary, Founding President of the American Holistic Medical Association.
One of the Greats have departed from our midst, leaving behind a legacy of profound impact. He lived a life marked by valor and purpose, and it is with great reverence that we highlight just a few of his monumental achievements.
Dr. Norman Shealy was not just one of the world's leading experts in pain management; he was a visionary in the field, developing safe and effective treatments such as Biogenics©, which brought relief to countless people suffering from chronic pain. In 1971, his foresight led to the establishment of the Shealy Institute, the nation's first comprehensive center for pain and stress management, an institution that has earned global respect for its groundbreaking, innovative and successful rehabilitation methods. He was among the first physicians ever, to specialize in the resolution of chronic pain.
Dr. Shealy's dedication to alleviating human suffering extended beyond conventional boundaries. His research into pain and stress resulted in over 275 scholarly works, yielding numerous pioneering treatments that greatly influenced the medical community and beyond. His teachings through seminars and workshops inspired both medical professionals and laypeople worldwide, and he served as a consultant to luminaries and leaders in every specialty, including the personal physicians of Presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower.
Echoing the sentiments of noted English physician Dr. Francis Peabody who famously said "The secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient." Dr. Shealy always believed that the true essence of medical care lied in compassionate care for the patient. This philosophy was evident from his early days in medical school, where he recognized the universal plight of pain and committed his career to its amelioration. While still in medical school, he once commented to a friend, “The most common symptom among humans is pain, but nobody seems to specialize in treatment of this symptom.”
Norm Shealy also used to say that “while the science of medicine is indispensable to the physician, it is the art of practicing medicine that heals the human body and soul.”
For over 3 decades, Norm Shealy was at the forefront of Alternative Medicine and Alternative Health Care and his contributions to Alternative Medicine were seminal. In the mid-60’s he introduced his major innovations for pain control — Dorsal Column Stimulation (DCS) and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, both now used worldwide. Shortly after which his emphasis broadened to include the vast field of Self-Regulation with the addition of biofeedback, autogenic training and his introduction of Biogenics©, a tool for stress reduction.
His holistic approach led to him founding the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978, integrating spiritual health into medical practice. He spent almost 20 years of research into anti-aging, particularly discovering five intrinsic electrical circuits in the human body, challenging traditional views on longevity, suggesting the human lifespan could extend to 140 years with the right interventions.
These intrinsic electrical circuits selectively raise DHEA, neurotensin, calcitonin, aldosterone or lower free radicals. More recently he demonstrated regrowth of telomeres, the tail of DNA.
Telomeres ordinarily shrink 1% each year after birth. His work with the RejuvaMatrix™ is the first to demonstrate rejuvenation of telomeres, a major key to anti-aging and longevity.
Dr. Shealy's work not only expanded the realm of Energy Medicine but also established Holos University Graduate Seminary. Instead of drugs and surgery, Holos University Graduate Seminary initiated a Masters of Holistic Health Practice. Dr. Shealy served there as President and continued as a Professor of Energy Medicine.
After retiring from his clinical services, Dr. Shealy carried on to enrich the medical field through research and education, emphasizing the art of healing alongside the science, sharing his concerns for patients and the medical profession alike.
In more recent years, Dr. Shealy shared his holistic insights through "Medical Renaissance—The Secret Code," demonstrating an extraordinary and unequalled success rate of 85% in treating over 30,000 patients with chronic pain and depression. For over 20 years his weekly radio program on KWTO in Springfield was the most popular call-in program in the Ozarks.
Dr. Shealy's legacy is not just in the treatments and institutions he founded but in the paradigm shift he initiated towards a more holistic, patient-centered approach to health. His life's work has laid the groundwork for a medical renaissance, advocating for education and self-responsibility in health, reshaping the future of healthcare for the betterment of all.
Dr. Shealy advocated that the future of true health would be enhanced tremendously with health Practitioners who teach, coach, counsel and educate individuals to take responsibility for their own health. As evidenced by his remarkable achievements, Dr. Norman Shealy was a distinguished individual whose contributions were both groundbreaking and numerous. Though he was blessed with a long, fulfilling life, it was with profound sorrow that we learned of his passing earlier this year and our hearts go out to his loved ones.
Our family feels incredibly fortunate to have known Dr. Norman Shealy and to have cultivated a friendship with him over the years. With the deepest respect and highest admiration, we bid you farewell on your journey, Norm. You will forever reside in our hearts, evoking smiles and a sense of pride in having known such an extraordinary person. For years to come we'll still talk about you and the positive impact you've had and will continue to have on so many people lives, may your legacy remain.
